Travel: Manzanillo, Melaque, Barra de Navidad & La Manzanilla
Renting a vehicle is a great way to get out and see some of the hidden beaches in the Costalegre area that can be found at and around Barra de Navidad, Melaque, Cuastecomates, La Manzanilla, Tenacatita, Careyes and Chamela. Or, make a trip up to Colima City and Comala or over to Manzanillo or Cuyutlan to see the turtle sanctuary and Palo Verde mangrove forest. There is no end of sightseeing and shopping you can do with a rental car.
We don't recommend one car rental agency over another. We've put together the following information about what is available in the area to help you shop. Price and insurance coverage varies.
An international driver's license is not required to operate a motor vehicle in Mexico. However, be sure to carry your vaild driver's license from home with you at all times when driving.
On insurance: People often ask "Should we buy insurance for our rental car?" This question is asked because in some rental contracts the insurance often costs as much as the initially quoted vehicle rental price. My answer, "If insurance is not included in the rental price then I would buy the insurance. Last thing anyone should want is to be in an accident situation anywhere with no insurance." If you have a credit card that includes rental car insurance as part of their card holder benefits package make sure with them that they will cover an accident in Mexico and that they give you a number that works in Mexico to call for help if you have a problem. If you have an accident in Mexico with no vehicle insurance you may find yourself in jail until you can pay a fine or for any damages caused by the accident.

Calls to a land line the Costalegre from other regions of Mexico including Manzanillo precede the number with 01-315.
To a TelCel phone from the USA and Canada precede the 10 digit cel phone number with 011-521.
From a land line in Mexico to a Telcel phone with a different LADA (first 3 digits) than you are calling from dial 045; with the same lada dial 044; then the 10 digit number.
Car Rental ZLO, Barra de Navidad, Melaque and Manzanillo
In Barra de Navidad, Peggy and Tracye Ross of the Crazy Cactus rent cars. Their office in their home on Calle 21 de Noviembre (number 9 on my map) is open November through April. Telephone year round 355-6091. e-mail. Their car rental prices include insurance.
In Barra de Navidad, Cristy and Enrique of Casa Senorina rent cars. Their office in Casa Senorina, corner of Vercruz and Michoacan (number 6 on my map) is open year round telephone 355-5315. e-mail. Cristy says that their car rental prices also include insurance and they have a jeep wagoneer that they rent if you have luggage or just need more space than a car offers.
In Melaque Agencia de Viages (Travel Agent) Fesa on Avenida Gomez Farias #15-C, just west of Banamex, rent cars and also have at least one twelve passenger van for rent. Sorry they have no web link or e-mail that I know of but their telephone number is 355-9124.
Budget, Hertz, Thrifty and Alamo, all rent cars in Manzanillo and at ZLO airport and they allow you to check rates and make a reservation on-line; if in doubt use ZLO, the Manzanillo airport code for the rental location. National had a rental outlet at ZLO and in Manzanillo but their internet reservations office has confrimed by e-mail that the Manzanillo office is closed. Note: the initial prices quotes on-line do not always include insurance. However, the insurance options are available on line and may be booked at the time of the initial reservation.
Car Rental Agencies in the Manzanillo telephone book:
Budget Rent A Car: Airport and Manzanillo 333-1445
Hertz Rent A Car: Airport 333-3191, Manzanillo 333-3141/3142
Dialing Phone numbers in Mexico:
Calls to a land line in Manzanillo from the USA or Canada are preceded with 011-52-314;
For calls to Manzanillo from other regions of Mexico including Costalegre precede the number with 01-314.
Not confusing enough? OK, calls to a land line in the same LADA dial only the last 7 numbers, calls from Telcel phone to Telcel phone dial only the 10 digit number if you are in the same calling zone as the number you call - even if you are on roam.
