Cabo Corrientes - Corrales, Mayto, Ipala, Tehuamixtle, Villa del Mar...
Tehuamixtle, Mayto, Aquiles Serdan, Villa del Mar and Ipala are tiny little villages located in the Municipality of Cabo Corrientes on the pacific coast of Jalisco Mexico south of Cabo Corrientes and the Bahia de Banderas. Corrales is located just north of Cabo Corrientes. The Municipal seat is located in El Tuito on highway 200. The majority of people in this area are employed in agriculture, silviculture or fishing. At this point tourism plays a very small role in employment in the area but that appears to be changing. There are two routes into the coastal area, one off of highway 200 from El Tuito that runs almost straight through the woods and ranchland to Mayto and the other off of highway 200 through Cruz de Lorreto that runs along the coast from the south.
Tehuamixtle is very small with perhaps 500 inhabitants. Nestled around a small cove at the bottom of a steep cliff road the town is comprised of four restaurants where you can find very fresh seafood a couple of really small stores and the homes of the residents. Candelaria's restaurant on the right facing the ocean have three clean rooms they rent to guests and Loreena's on the left facing the ocean has two. I have slept well in both. The beach in Tehua is very protected and safe for swimming and the cement jetty is a great place to sit and watch the world go by - very slowly.
Tiny Mayto slighly to the north of Tehua has one nice hotel on the beach with pool, if you want to stay there call for reservations though, they are often booked with large groups. There is also a beach home for rent at Mayto. The actual settlement of Mayto is up on the road where you can find a mechanic and a small store. There are a couple of restaurants at the beach, one in the hotel.
Villa del Mar and Ipala just south of Tehua are pretty little communities along the shore of the pacific. There are rustic bungalows on the cliffs between Villa and Tehua, ask for information at the largest store in Villa del Mar or at the Palapa rental office.
Aquilles Serdan, just north of Mayto is a tiny little hamlet, it is not on the shore but one can walk down to the ocean and a lagoon that lies between the hamlet and the ocean.
Corrales is another little hamlet nestled along the shore of two pretty bays about 30 minutes north of Aquilles Serdan, the drive in through lush jungle foliage is worth the trip but the real treat is once you arrive. From Corrales you can take a panga across the bay to the trailhead of the trail along the cliffs to the lighthouse on Cabo Corrientes. The lighthouse workings were brought from England in the mid 1800's and the light is powered to this day by diesel brought to the site on the backs of mules and donkeys using the trail along the cliffs.
