Tecolotlán
Tecolotlán is a picturesque town of some 8,000 inhabitants situated at about 4,000 feet above sea level along highway 80. It is roughly two and a half hours from the Barra de Navidad and Melaque area on route to Guadalajara. The word Tecolotlán in Náhuatl means place of the owls or place where owls are revered. Tecolotlán is primarily a farming and ranching community as well as a commercial centre for the area.
The Tecolotlán area was conquered by the Spaniards in 1524 and features some interesting colonial architecture such as; a stone aqueduct used for irrigation and the Templo of the Santísima Trinidad that was begun by the Franciscans in 1599 as the Templo Parroquial de San Agustín, renovated from 1868 to 1894 and rededicated as the Santísima Trinidad.
Also of interest are the El Santuario de la Purísima, dedicated to the Virgen of Tecolotlán, that was started in 1821 and finished on the 7th of December 1869, and the Centro Cultural Tecolotlán that was constructed in 1856 and is the work of don Serapio Pérez.
