La Manzanilla
La Manzanilla, famous for the abundance of crocodiles to be found in the lagoon, is a quaint fishing village of approximately 3,000 inhabitants located about 16km northwest of Melaque, or 19km from Barra de Navidad, 45 minutes north of the Manzanillo airport. It has a variety of accommodations including elegant villas and bungalows, mid to low range hotels and serveral campgrounds along the beach heading towards Boca de Iguanas. There is no ATM or bank in La Manzanilla, the nearest being found in Melaque so bring some cash with you.
There are many restaurants to try out both in the little town centre area and along the beach. Restaurants of note and serving other than Mexican fare are; Martin's with their continental menu featuring flambed items such as deserts, coffees and main courses and Jolanda's with a Thai and Dutch Indonesian menu. There are several small grocery stores in town but their stock is limited as is the selection of chicken and meat available for purchase so if you plan to cook best bring in some groceries from Melaque or Manzanillo.
The town centre is very picturesque, there is very little vehicle traffic and the town is only a few blocks long and deep so it's really easy to get around. Located on Tenacatita Bay the beach at La Manzanilla is almost flat making it great for walking the 5km to Boca de Iguanas, if it gets too hot to return along the beach there is a dirt road with lots of shade you can take back. The waves in the bay are very gentle making it great for swimming and while the beach is rocky in a couple of places it's predominantly golden sand for miles.
