La Huerta
La Huerta is a town of approximately 9,000 inhabitants located at roughly 1,600 feet above sea level on highway 80 about one hour from the Barra de Navidad and Melaque area on the way to Guadalajara. The municipality extends from the hills to the beach and La Huerta is the governmental municipal centre for the coastal towns of Perula, Chamela, Careyes, Tenacatita and La Manzanilla.
It has been suggested that the town was named for an orchard (huerta) planted by one José Olmedo on his ranch in the area sometime after 1827. The principal industries of La Huerta are farming - sugar cane is a key crop - ranching, and silviculture as well as tourism in the beach communities of the municipio.
Just down highway 80 from La Huerta heading towards Autlan at la Concha one can visit ancient petroglyphs carved high in a limestone cliff. Close by hidden amongst the sugar cane fields there is also a natural hot springs that is open to the public. There are also caves in the same limestone ridge where the petroglyphs are located but there is little information about them avaialble.
