Comala
Comala, el Pueblo Magico, is a small town located just 12km from Colima City. It was declared a Historical Monument area in 1988 by the Colima government and due to this maintains the look of an authentic colonial town. The name Comala is derived from the Náhuatl Comalli and means place where they make clay griddles. The area has been populated for over 3000 years by the Olmec, Náhuatl, Toltec, Chichimec, and lastly the Tarasca peoples, who were those living in the area at the time of the Spanish conquest in 1527.
Comala may be best known for it's Mariachis and the four restaurants at Los Portales on one side of the central Jardin. A favorite spot of local and visiting Mexicans it's a great place to have a few drinks, eat the free botanas that come with the drinks and fritter away the afternoon hours listening to the battle of the Mariachis. However, Comala and area have a lot more to offer. Comala and the Municipio of Comala are home to artisans that make wooden furniture in the style of Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, the mask maker of Suchitlán who hand carves masks to order from wood, coffee growers and processors and the makers of "ponche." Try the nuez, it tastes just like Bailey's! The Municipio of Comala also offers opportunities to enjoy pure, unspoilt nature with visits to Laguna Maria, Campo Cuatro in the Sierra Manantlán Biosphere Reserve and the Orchards of Comala, a nature preserve.

More about Comala...
Also of interest in the Comala area are the 18th century Nogueras Church and the 19th century Ex Hacienda Nogueras. The ex-hacienda once a sugar growing and processing operation is now managed by the University of Colima and features a museum with exhibits of pre-hispanic artifacts excavated in the area and the art and furniture of Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo. One can also take a walking tour of the extensive and beautiful gardens. Many visitors come just to see the nearby Volcán de Colima, the dormant 4323 meter (14,220') Nevado de Colima, and the currently active 3980 meter (13,087') Volcán de Fuego. And those with a mystical bend can visit the "Zona Magica," located just outside of Comala on the road to the volcanos, where water appears to run up hill and vehicles appear to be pulled up hill with the engine turned off.
