Cihuatlán and Rebalse
Cihuatlán is the municipal centre for the Barra de Navidad and Melaque area and the municipio has a population just in excess of 30,000 people. The actual town of Cihuatlan has a population of some 16,000 inhabitants.
Cihuatlán in Náhuatl - though sometimes incorrectly translated as place where the amazon women live - means place where there are lots of women because when the Spaniards arrived in 1523 it is reported that they found some 500 women and only 20 men living in the settlement along the Marabasco River that is now Cihuatlan.
Cihuatlan today - in addition to being a commercial, banking and business centre for the area - is a large producer of fruit and vegetables. The flat land between Cihuatlan and the Pacific and around Rebalse, a community just outside the town, is almost entirely devoted to farming and is serviced by an extensive canal system for irrigation. Fruits from Cihuatlan are shipped to markets as far away as Japan.
