Boca de Iguanas
Boca de Iguanas, located about 18km northwest of Barra de Navidad on Tenacatita Bay, is still so small it's not even a village. It has limited accommodations consisting of a few campgrounds and trailer parks two hotels/bungalows and one Inn above the beach on a cliff. There was another large hotel on the beach in Boca de Iguanas but it was destroyed in a boiler explosion over 20 years ago, the ruins of the hotel can still be observed to this day.
Boca de Iguanas also has two restaurants that sell beer, pop and snack foods as well as meals. Boca does not really have any grocery stores so if you are planning to camp or stay in a bungalow and do your own cooking, you need to bring your food with you. There is no bus service into Boca de Iguanas so if you are not driving you will need to walk from La Manzanilla or highway 200 about 4 km each, or take a taxi.
Boca de Iguanas like La Manzanilla has some resident Crocodiles in the lagoon so if you bring your dog with you don't let him run loose. You can walk from Boca de Iguanas to La Manzanilla along the level and fairly firm beach or by taking the paved road out of Boca and then the turn off onto a dirt road to your right just past the ruined hotel. This road runs along the back of the mangrove swamp parallel to the beach and provides a fair amount of shade on hot afternoons. Our Cinco Playas Tenacatita Bay mountain bike tour utilizes this route between La Manzanilla and Boca de Iguanas.
Boca de Iguanas has some good waves for boogie boarding but watch out for the undertow, it is recommended for strong swimmers only. Apart from playing in the waves, riding through on a mountain bike tour, laying, sitting or walking on the beach and bird watching there is not very much to do in Boca de Iguanas. However, Boca de Iguanas is still truly unspoiled and natural so it's definately worth a visit but visit soon, development of the area has already started.
