Barra de Navidad
Located on the Costalegre just 25 minutes North of the Manzanillo Playa de Oro airport and about 3.5 hours South of Puerto Vallarta, Barra de Navidad is a tourism equipped beach town/fishing village of some 8,000 inhabitants situated between Bahia Navidad and Laguna Navidad on a sandbar. This means that it has a beach to suit everyone one on the ocean and the other on the lagoon. Surfing is even possible some days at the end of the Malecon by the jetty. Barra is 5 minutes by water taxi from Isla Navidad's Grand Bay Hotel, Marina and 27 hole golf course, 10 minutes by bus from Melaque and about an hour north of Manzanillo, Colima. The centre of town is 3km from highway 200.
Barra de Navidad boasts a good cross section of restaurants and accommodation so there is something to suit most everyone's taste and budget. The quiet streets in the centre of town are paved with cobblestones and adoquin and that, coupled with a breeze, either off the ocean or from the lagoon and distant Playa de Cocos, makes strolling easy and pleasant even in the afternoons. The town square, called the Jardin NOT the Zocalo, is located between Avenida Veracruz, the main street into town, and Lopez de Legazpi, the street that runs along the beach. Renovated in 2006 the Jardin is a pretty oasis of trees and gardens with a stage at one end for live performances in the evenings and the traditional bandstand found in the Jardins in most small Mexican towns. With benches scattered around here and there in the shade the Jardin is a good place to rest, relax and watch the world go by at any time of the day or evening.
The police station and an ATM are located together just off the town square on Veracruz. In addition to the many varied hotels and restaurants Barra de Navidad also has several small grocery stores, pharmacies, doctor's offices, a dentist, hairdressers, a florist, clothing and shoe stores, hardware stores, wash and fold laundries, butcher shops and an abuncance of handicraft stores. If you can't find what you need the Tiangus (roving street market) sets up in Barra de Navidad every Thursday. Stretching for four blocks starting across from the Jardin many bargains can be found under the waving canvas of the weekly Tiangus.
| Barra is the "on the water" activities centre for all of Bahia de Navidad due to it's lagoon that is open to the sea by a channel deep and wide enough to be navigable by even large 150 foot yachts. For this reason most fishing charters, snorkel tours and all diving charters depart from Barra de Navidad. Even most of the fishing charter operators from Melaque, San Patricio and Villa Obregon leave from the docks on the lagoon in Barra de Navidad because there are no dock facilities in the other communities. The Port Captain for the area, including Tenacatita and La Manzanilla, is located in Barra de Navidad and there is a boat launch ramp adjacent to the Cabo Blanco Hotel and Marina. There is another boat launch ramp adjacent to the Isla Navidad Marina as well as a marine Pemex station.
