Autlán de Navarro
Autlán de Navarro is a pleasant little town of some 35,000 inhabitants situated at about 2,900 feet above sea level in a valley along highway 80. It is roughly two hours from the Barra de Navidad and Melaque area on route to Guadalajara.
The word Autlán in Náhuatl means place where there is a canal or route for water. Best known to many Mexicans as the birthplace of musician Carlos Santana, Autlán is primarily a farming and ranching community as well as a commercial centre for the area. The University of Guadalajara campus at Autlán draws students from all over Jalisco State.
The Autlán area was conquered by the Spaniards in 1524 and features some interesting colonial architecture such as the convent of Autlán, originally constructed in 1542 and modified in 1745, the mission-style church Santa Maria of Guadalupe or of the Montañas, dating from the 16th century and the Templo Santa Catarina in the delegación of Ahuacapán near Autlán that was completed in 1749.
