Barra to La Manzanilla Rough Rider
Tour time: 6-8 hours,
Riding time: 3-4 hrs. 1 way, 6-8 hrs. rtn.
This and our Cihuatlán, Rio Marabasco, Isla Navidad mountain bike tour are the only tours in our 4 to 8 hour mountain bike tour category that run without a support vehicle. We ride off road on this tour and after the first half hour there are no stores along the way where we can replenish water supplies so we carry extra water. If you have a camel back you may want to bring it with you. This tour involves a two kilometre steady climb up a dirt road. There are also about three kilometers of single track riding through rolling countryside and more climbing along the way. The return to sea level a La Manzanilla through Los Engenios is down hill all the way though!

Mountain Bike tours depart from Barra de Navidad, 1 hour north of Manzanillo and 10 minutes from Melaque by bus. The Manzanillo and Melaque buses stop in Barra de Navidad 1 block from our office. Get off the bus and walk towards the centre of Barra on Avenida Veracruz, the main street the bus stations are on. We are located one block down, at 204 Veracruz, next to the Cristal ice factory, directly across from the town square (Jardin) and catty corner from the ATM.

The Barra to La Mazanilla Roughrider mountian bike tour starts between 7:30 and 8:00 am. because its cooler then for the climbing involved. Please arrive at the office about 1/2 an hour early so we can get you outfitted with a bike and helmet.

The total tour runs about 20 km on steep, rolling and flat land. This tour is recommended for experienced technical riders only. Less experienced riders may want to choose another of our five to eight hour bike tours.

Difficulty: challenging
This mountain bike tour is designed for experienced mountain bike riders that really want to leave civilization behind, do some fairly serious mountain biking and catch a glimpse of the countryside on some of the remote ranchos in the sierra. There are about 3 km of rough, rocky, ungroomed up and down single track to ride on this tour. If that is not what you are looking for or if don't have experience with that sort of terrain this tour is not for you and we encourage you to choose another of our tours.
After leaving Barra de Navidad, we ride along dirt roads through the plantations of mango and palm trees and the villages of Jaluco and Pinal Villa. Then we cut over to ride along the shoulder of highway 80 for 2 km to the Ejido of La Paz. Just past La Paz we enter a wooded area and follow a dirt road that runs beside an arroyo thick with foliage, this place is a tropical and shady throughout the year which is good because here the climb to the top of the hills we will traverse begins. Once we've climbed from sea level to the top of the hills we enjoy the view and then set off for our trip along dirt roads and single track trails through the rolling hills.
Near a deserted little settlement called Los Engenios Viejo we begin our descent, the views are great and the breeze we generate going downhill is refreshing. It's a 3 km ride on the flat into La Manzanilla where we can cool off even more with a dip in the ocean and a cold beverage at one of the many palapa restaurants that line the beach there. Then it's back to Barra de Navidad, Melaque, San Patricio or Villa Obregon by bike or by vehicle - your choice. Or if you want to ride more you can choose to combine the Barra to La Manzanilla Rough Rider with our Cinco Playas Tenacatita Bay Mountain Bike Tour. For a fit mountain bike rider these two tours combined make for a really good workout and a day full of beautiful scenery.
