El Palmito Private Playa
Tour time: 5-8 hours
Riding Time: 1 to 2-1/2 hours
This bike ride is perfect for those who want a 45 minute to 1 hour ride mainly down hill, and then spend the day at a deserted tropical beach. The ride back up the hill is optional but it's shady in the jungle and it's a great way to burn off your beverages and picnic lunch.

Mountain Bike tours depart from Barra de Navidad, 1 hour north of Manzanillo and 10 minutes from Melaque by bus. The Manzanillo and Melaque buses stop in Barra de Navidad 1 block from our office. Get off the bus and walk towards the centre of Barra on Avenida Veracruz, the main street the bus stations are on. We are located one block down, at 204 Veracruz, next to the Cristal ice factory, directly across from the town square (Jardin) and catty corner from the ATM.

The El Palmito Private Playa mountian bike tour starts between 8:30 and 9:00 am. Please arrive at the office about 1/2 an hour early so we can get you outfitted with a bike and helmet.

Mexican transportation law forbids us transporting tourists in our support vehicle on city or federal roadways. Therefore, we travel by taxi or bus from our starting point in Barra de Navidad to the El Tamarindo entrance road, which is located 12km from the Barra de Navidad and Melaque area and approximately 70km from Manzanillo, Colima. We travel by bus or taxi back to Barra at the end of the tour. While it's only 12km we don't ride the bikes on Federal Highway 200 because it is a narrow twisty road with no shoulders. We won't leave you until you are safely on your bus or in your taxi.

Difficulty: low in, challenging out
The bike ride down to the beach is mostly down hill. There is one small climb on the cobblestone roadway into Tamarindo. Once we turn off the the dirt road there is no more climbing -- unless you choose to ride out again. The dirt road through the canopy of thick jungle is perfect for mountain biking and it's down hill all the way to the beach, so down hill in fact you will be glad we have good brakes on the bikes!
When we arrive at the beach you can enjoy this pristine and deserted private playa anyway you like. You can swim, boogie-board, go on a nature hike or just lay around and relax. Birds are plentiful both along the shore and in the thick jungle foliage and such a deserted location makes for wonderful bird watching. The water in the bay is clean and clear and the natural long bay at El Palmito makes the ocean safe for children most days, with adult supervision of course. There is a simple Palapa for shade and we bring along straw mats, umbrellas, hammocks, folding chairs, tables and ice water. It's rustic, no baños just bushes, but Palmito displays the nature of the Costalegre at it's best and all you need to do is simply enjoy your day at this beautiful beach however you want to!
There are no stores or restaurants here but you can add our Authentic Mexican Asado (Barbecue) or our Deli Style Lunch with coolers of ice-cold beer and soft drinks to your tour.
When it's time to return you can ride back up to the highway the way we came, or jump on board the support vehicle and we'll haul you and the bikes up the hill. If you want to end your day on a special note, we can arrange for your return to Barra de Navidad by boat as the sun sinks low into the western pacific.
