Sierra to the Sea
Tour time: 6-8 hours Riding Time: 3-1/2 to 4 hours |
This tour is perfect for people accustomed to riding mountain bikes and who want a very scenic 3 to 4 hour ride through rolling countryside. There are three challenging but short climbs on the trip and plenty of time to experience the culture in small villages and quaint settlements along the way.
Mountain Bike tours depart from Barra de Navidad, 1 hour north of Manzanillo and 10 minutes from Melaque by bus. The Manzanillo and Melaque buses stop in Barra de Navidad 1 block from our office. Get off the bus and walk towards the centre of Barra on Avenida Veracruz, the main street the bus stations are on. We are located one block down, at 204 Veracruz, next to the Cristal ice factory, directly across from the town square (Jardin) and catty corner from the ATM.
The Sierra Villages to the Sea mountian bike tour starts between 7:00 and 7:30 am. because its about an 1 hour drive to the starting point. Please arrive at the office about 1/2 an hour early so we can get you outfitted with a bike and helmet.
Mexican transportation law forbids us transporting tourists in our support vehicle on city or federal roadways. Therefore, we travel in a taxi or a vehicle with tourism registration from our starting point in Barra de Navidad to Tequesquitlán near the Sierra Manantlán, located 36km from the Barra de Navidad and Melaque area and just a bit further from Manzanillo, Colima. We end the tour on the bikes in Barra de Navidad.
The bike riding starts at Tequesquitlán which is 32 km from Barra de Navidad. The trip is support vehicle assisted and for those accustomed to 3 or 4 hours in a bike saddle this trip will be enjoyable.

Difficulty: moderate with challenge
We arrive in quaint Tequesquitlán about an hour after leaving Barra de Navidad and we take some time to explore the town visiting the town square and possibly grabbing some breakfast or a torta if you are hungry. Tequesquitlán is a ranching community in the municipio of Cihuatlán where farming, cattle ranching and orcharding are the major industry.
Once you are ready we are off by mountain bike to El Almolon, a remote and tiny settlement deep in the hills. On the way to El Almolon we will pass orchards of tamarindo and limes and fields of blue agave. After El Almolon we will visit Las Trancas, an even smaller settlement made up of three houses and some farm animals. There is a nice creek just off the main trail at Las Trancas were we can stop for a rest and cool off if you like before beginning that last climb and then the down hill stretch into Barra de Navidad.
Between Tequesquitlán and the coast the scenery is varied. On the trip we will pass through pasture, mango and coconut plantations, tropical jungle, fields cultivated with agave (used in the production of Tequila), canja (sugar cane) and tamarindo.
