Tour Description and Difficulty:
Day 1: Moderate
Day 2: Easy
|
| We drive for 2.5 hours until we reach the town of El Tuito on highway 200. There we climb on the mountain bikes and head out on the dirt and gravel road the 36km to Tehuamixtle on the coast. We will pass over two ridges on the way to the coast so there are two good climbs but the view from the top of both is worth the effort. About 20km from El Tuito we pass through the tiny settlement of Lleno Grande.
About 45 minutes off the road from Lleno Grande is a hot spring we can visit if you like or we can keep on going the last 14km to Mayto and then Tehuamixtle. |
| You have a choice of accommodation once we arrive at the beach; the hotel Mayto with pool on Mayto beach about 4km before Tehuamixtle is nice, or you can choose to stay in simple sea side rooms operated by two of the restaurants in Tehua. It's up to you and depends on what you want to spend, see How Much below for details. Either way we'll have a fresh seafood meal in Tehua and meet some of the 85 local people who live in this little outpost. Apart from that there is not much to do but swim and relax in the shade after the mountain bike ride in. |
| In the morning after breakfast we'll mount the bikes again and continue our ride the 41km along the beach south to Cruz de Loretto. We'll pass through the little settlements of Villa del Mar and Ipala along the beach. While the ocean is along side of us for the entire ride it's open ocean with an undertow and farily large surf so it's not good for swimming. There is one good beach about half way along the road where it's sheltered and safe to stop off for a swim. We'll have lunch in Cruz de Loretto and return to Barra de Navidad and Melaque by vehicle. |
