We start riding the mountain bikes from Barra de Navidad along flat dirt roads behind Melaque to la Quebradora. There the road climbs into the hills narrowing with overgrowth as it passes through an area where large trees and vines make a shady jungle canopy overhead. As the road climbs about 3km it turns to double track and emerges at the top of the hill to a grassy open area. We continue to follow the now single track through flat and downhill terrain as it narrows to rough single track. There are about 4km of rough single track where you may find it necessary to get off the bike from time to time. After that we join up with another dirt road for the final descent into Los Engenios then it’s on to La Manzanilla for a well deserved late lunch and a swim in the ocean.
We'll spend the night in rustic Los Engenios or in the quaint little beach town of La Manzanilla. Either way you can view the many large Crocodiles in the La Manzanilla lagoon, swim in the ocean, sun bathe, stroll the beach or loiter in the picturesque La Manzanilla jardin (town square) and meet some of the local people.

Difficulty:
Day 1: Difficult to Extreme with 4km of rough single track
Day 2: Moderate

The next morning after breakfast we're off by bike to Boca de Iguanas, a nice easy ride along the ocean with a fresh breeze to keep us cool. Leaving Boca, we head away from the beach and over to Tenacatita along trails through jungle, farmland, along 7km of cobblestone road and then trails around the back of the Tenacatita Lagoon. By mountain bike on back roads our route is fairly direct and generally takes about 3 hours leaving time for snorkeling at the beach.
If we don't want to head straight to Tenacatita we can ride another hour on trails to El Tecuan and the Tenacatita river.
The Tenacatita area is truly a paradise with very little commercial development. It boasts a 4km sparkling golden sand beach with gentle waves that are perfect for either body surfing or swimming. There is a coral reef at Playa Mora for snorkeling. The beach is lined with restaurants offering the very freshest seafood as well as cold beverages. The many dirt and sand trails along the beach and around the lagoon and river offer great off-road cycling with opportunities to view local wildlife. You can also take a Jungle River Tour with the local fishermen.
