Playas and Plantations around
Barra de Navidad and Melaque
Tour time: 2-4 hours
This tour is suitable for those who want a relaxing bike ride around the Barra de Navidad, Aguacate, Jaluco, Pinal Villa and Melaque area on the flat back roads and quiet streets for 2 to 4 hours. A climb up to El Mirador (the viewpoint) above Melaque is optional but worth considering. It's not really steep and there are scenic places to stop and enjoy the expanding view on the climb up and once at the top the view is truely spectacular! Plus, if you ride up, you can enjoy the breeze you'll pick up on the ride back down.

Mountain Bike tours depart from Barra de Navidad, 1 hour north of Manzanillo and 10 minutes from Melaque by bus. The Manzanillo and Melaque buses stop in Barra de Navidad 1 block from our office. Get off the bus and walk towards the centre of Barra on Avenida Veracruz, the main street the bus stations are on. We are located one block down, at 204 Veracruz, next to the Cristal ice factory, directly across from the town square (Jardin) and catty corner from the ATM.

The Playas and Plantations Barra de Navidad and Melaque bike tour starts between 8:00 and 8:30 am. Please arrive about 1/2 an hour early so we can get you outfitted with a bike and helmet.

Difficulty: low with a moderate option
Starting from Barra de Navidad we ride the bikes around the town, including the Malecon at the beach. We head off to Aguacate to see how the bricks used in construction in the area are still made in the traditional manner, on route we pass a place where salt is extracted from the sea also in the traditional manner. From Aguacate we ride 500 meters on the highway in the break down / bike lane before heading off towards Jaluco through banana and coconut plantations. From here we can do more riding around the shady back roads or head straight over to Melaque.
Once we reach Melaque, if you choose to, before it gets too warm we mountain bike up a dirt road to the Mirador above Melaque where you can see the entire Barra de Navidad and Melaque area, including Isla Navidad, Bahia Navidad, the Laguna de la Navidad, Laguna del Tule and the Pacific Ocean spread out before you. We then ride back down the hill and take a tour of Melaque where you can take a swim in the ocean to cool off.

On the trip back to Barra we take a different but still shady route through Jaluco where we again pass by farms and orchards where chiles, tomatoes, coconuts, tamarindo, papayo, banana, and mangos are grown. Your English speaking local Mexican guide will be happy to explain farming and orchard methods used in the area.

We return by bike to Sea to Sierra Outdoor Adventures in Barra de Navidad or if you are staying in Melaque we can leave you there and get the bikes back to Barra ourselves.
