La Concha Petroglyphs Tour
Join us on a full day tour from Barra de Navidad and Melaque into the hills behind the Costalegre and Manzanillo where you’ll have the opportunity to explore pre-Hispanic petroglyphs and visit a church that is over 200 year-old in a quaint mountain village. You’ll also meet the people of Cuzalapa, a remote semi-indigenous village in the Sierra Manantlán Biosphere Reserve where the women have started coffee and embroidery cooperatives as a way of sustaining their families using the raw materials and skills they have available to them.
We leave Barra de Navidad – one hour north of Manzanillo Colima and 10 minutes south of Melaque by bus or car, between 8:00 and 9:00 am your choice. Following highway 80 into the hills we’ll travel for about an hour before we pass through La Huerta. After La Huerta we pass through La Concha and Cuautitlán on our way to Cuzalapa where we’ll enjoy a coffee break featuring fresh roasted, shade grown, organic arabica coffee along with breads and muffins made by the ladies of the area using native plants and fruits. After our break we will tour the many different plots of over 100 year-old coffee plants that make up the Cuzalapa Coffee Cooperative. There is also time to shop for home made jams, jellies and pickles and hand made, hand embroidered manta clothing made by the Cuzalapa Ladies Embroidery Cooperative.
Day Trips
Our next stop is at Cuautitlán where we will tour the over 200 year-old church that features a beautifully hand painted interior. There will be time to stroll around the town and the lovely central Jardin before we are off to La Concha and the petroglyphs.
Before heading off for the short hike up to the petroglyphs you’ll want to make sure that you’ve put on some shoes with good grip because we will be doing some climbing over boulders and slabs of rock. It’s a short hike/climb though and the petroglyphs are really worth it. After climbing back down to the roadway we are off to the natural hot springs a few kilometers away. Here you can enjoy the thermal waters and if you like we can arrange a picnic of carne asada (BBQ) with salsas and tortillas before we head back to Barra de Navidad and Melaque or we can stop off in La Huerta for lunch at the Restaurant Colonial on the Plaza.
Trip includes water and soft drinks, coffee and snack and full lunch with two beverages.
