Sea to Sierra Outdoor Adventures: Cultural Vehicle Eco Tours: to the La Florena Eco Site and underground cave south of Manzanillo, Colima, with hiking and mountain biking options embarking from Barra de Navidad.

La Florena Eco-Ranch Cave, Hike and optional Mountain Bike Tour
Join us for a full day in the great outdoors at Rancho Tecolote and the La Floreña Ecosite where you can ride a mountain bike 24 km along a shady mountain back road, explore a large underground cave, observe birds and iguanas in their native habitat, hike along a shady path to a view point high above the ocean and relax in the peace and quiet of this private nature reserve.
We leave Barra de Navidad – one hour north of Manzanillo Colima and 10 minutes south of Melaque by bus or car, at 9:00 am. If you are staying in the Manzanillo area there is no need to come to Barra de Navidad, we can make arrangements to pick you up where you are staying. We travel by vehicle to Las Juntas 11 km south of downtown Manzanillo where we meet our guide from the Ecosite. Those who plan to ride mountain bikes to the Ecosite mount the bikes here for the 12 km ride up to Rancho Tecolote. The ride involves climbing but the climbs are interspersed with flat and rolling stretches and there is plenty of shade – plus we do the climb in the morning so it’s cool. The return in the afternoon is down hill all the way!
We have a coffee break and a snack in the palapa at the ecosite before beginning the 30 to 45 minute hike along the trail leading through the woods to the cave. Steps of logs and dirt and ropes to hang onto have been provided where necessary along the trail as the climb up to the cave is steep in places. There is a rest stop with rustic log benches about half way up. At the cave entrance a wooden ladder and a rope aide us as we climb down into cave. Once inside the small entrance way widens into a large chamber on three levels that is spacious and more than high enough to stand upright in. The lighting provided by a gas generator on the surface displays the many different shapes and colours of the stalactites hanging singly and in groups from the ceiling as well as other interesting rock formations in a multitude of cream, beige and rust shades. The cave is truly spectacular and not a bit claustrophobic once inside.
Day Trips
After exploring the cave if you are still up for it we will climb another 200 meters to a viewpoint on a cliff with a spectacular view of the now dry arroyo, valley and ocean far below our vantage point.
After the hike we return to the palapa that is set up with a traditional wood burning outdoor clay stove/griddle and rustic benches and tables. Here Doña Teresa will prepare a wonderful traditional home cooked meal of wood grilled fish from the fishpond or grilled beef with salsas and tortillas hecho en mano from pure ground corn instead of from corn flour. Then there is time for bird and iguana watching, walking in the woods or just chilling out before we mount the bikes or get in the vehicle for the ride back to Las Juntas and then our starting point in Barra de Navidad or the Manzanillo area.
Trip includes water and soft drinks, coffee and snack and full lunch with beverages. If coming from Barra de Navidad and Melaque you may take a bus to the main Manzanillo bus station and use the price schedule from Manzanillo.
